China's Ministry of Education recently issued a notice declaring that it will temporarily suspend authentication of online degrees from overseas institutions. The notice comes at a time when many schools are still forced to offer a part or all of their courses online due to the pandemic.

This caused a lot of confusion among students who are taking classes online as the pandemic still rifles in many countries and they can't attend offline classes. Here are clarifications made by the ministry on the second notice.

Why?

In order to ensure overseas students' safety and health during the pandemic, the ministry adjusted degree authentication system to include those who had taken online classes either fully or in part.

This loophole was soon exploited by some overseas institutions and agents looking to make quick profits. Many institutions set up online courses and lowered admission standards, admitted more students than their capacity, and made false publicity campaigns such as guaranteed "enrollment, graduation, and degree authentication by the Chinese Ministry of Education."

As this will affect the quality of education and lead to fraud, the Ministry of Education decided to halt authentication of overseas students' degrees obtained by attending online classes.

Who Should be Worried?

We all know that online classes did not just begin after the pandemic, they only went mainstream after it. In fact, remote learning is still a way some people obtain their degrees.

So, who will be affected by this? How about students who were taking offline classes but turned to online classes due to the pandemic?

Answer: Students who were studying offline and had to switch to online classes due to the pandemic will not be affected by this change. Their degrees will be authenticated by the ministry upon graduation.

How about those who are remote learning in overseas institutions?

Answer: Ever since the ministry began offering overseas academic degree authentication, degrees obtained through remote learning from institutions overseas are not and have never been covered under the scope of the China's Ministry of Education. Thus, the ministry can not authenticate such academic degrees.
